Mangalyam tantunanena mama jeevana hetuna
kanthe badhnami subhage twam jeeva sarada satam”

We call it as mantra actually the fact is its not a mantra…..If you have any doubt in this,
Let us examine the true meaning of this Sanskrit Mantara which is as follows:

“This is a sacred thread. This is essential for my long life. I tie this around your neck, O maiden having many auspicious attributes may you live happily for a hundred years“

For your undertanding :

  1. Mangalyam thanthuna anena--This mangal sutra (This sacred thread)(thantu–thread) 
  2. hetuna–is essential (hetu-reason,purpose) 
  3. mama-my, jeevana–life(long life)(for my long life) 
  4. Kante-around your neck( in, on etc prepositions are signified by the ‘e’ ending) 
  5. badhnami—I am tying 
  6. Subhage–oh,maiden of many auspicious attributes 
  7. twam–you(may you) 
  8. jeeva-–live 
  9. sarada–years( from Sarad ritu) 
  10. satam–hundred
